TOOL AND SHOP ORGANIZATION IDEAL |
Now and then on different forums there's a request for 'organization' suggestions... I usually post a picture or two. I finally decided to put all the pictures on one page. |
I have a 24x24 shop in which I'm building a '53 f-100 truck. With the truck disassembled... it gets a little crowded sometimes |
. Here's what I do. |
Drawers and containers.... you can't have too many and they should be labeled with contents... even then... you'll overlook the thing you're looking for... your brain and eyes abandon you.. I started buying these cabinets years ago..15 draweres each. There are 16 of them stacked at the back edge of my main work bench .I use them for small stuff.... electronic parts , small (less the 1/4") bolts and nuts, sheet metal screws and misc stuff that gets lost in the shop. I have two more for assorted nails and brads hanging on another wall. Each is labeled with content and of course the top of them is unfornunately another shelf. It took a little while to get them all organized and labeled but it saves hours sometimes when I need a 'hickey' that holds up a shelf in the garage. |
These cabinets pictured below are amazing... 4 drawers with about 20 compartments each... each drawer can be removed from the stack... they sit in roller bearing trays and have a lid to keep contents dust free... They're not cheap. I picked this one up at a salvage sale ... still in the box for 25 bucks. I wish I had 10 more. I keep all my stainless hardware 1/4" and less in them and my brass fittings and screws. |
This messy corner holds plastic shoe boxes that contain stuff that is too large for my smaller drawers...zip ties, locks, tie wire, gloves, safety glasses, zip lock bags.. tire plugs... plumbing stuff and other bulky items... Fabbed it up from 1" square tubing, flat bar stock and 3/4 plywood spaced to fit these boxes. Again, labels are your friend. |
Hardware... this group of cabinets are amazing... got them at work (surplus) for 5 bucks a section and there are 9 sections.... 45 bucks.. the leter sized drawers on the left hold sandpaper, electrical supplies, misc metal scrap, battery chargers...the ones on the top right are also misc stuff. the bottom several sections are all hardware... from 1/4 to 7/8"... zinc coated, stainless, coppere... wood screws, pop rivets and other fasteners You can find these at auctions, liquidation sales, estate sales, bankruptcies..... anywhere something is closing down or going out of business... |
don't forget the labels... they are what makes it all work |
some other ideas to utilize space efficiently instead of heaps and piles |
Clamp
rack too many clamps for one drawer... so I went overhead. |
Grinder Rack |
I
keep several grinders loaded with cutoff wheels, grinding rocks, wire wheels, sanding
disk... and they were always in a tangle under my welding table.... single piece of
angle iron bolted to the legs and BAM |
Drill Bit Rack |
I had
an old drill bit index... dusty and small... could never read the sizes...
bought two of these indexes on ebay for about 5 bucks and made one I can see ...
